Quiz Night (something!) - The Muppets Take Meakins

Its back. The Post Thread that absolutely no are is talking about and even fewer actually read. Yes it’s the Meakins Cricket club Quiz.
Well I've been away only one week and look what happened. Even more surprising than Stoke City’s promotion. Even more unexpected than the Andy Murray victory Ive just watched, and as unlikely as Vicky & me getting through a quiz without a pointless raw. Yes, wait for it, (drum roll) The Muppets have won (Guess the post title gave it away a bit). Now all dramatic suspense is lost, but in the style of Colombo (a fellow wonky eyer), where we know the murderer from the beginning I will plough on in a shambling manner.
The room looked different this night. Sixth sense failed to make an appearance. I would like to think they seared off by my return, but I think they probably had other commitments! The mighty Non Blondes were supplemented by Michael a cousin of Vicky’s and a friend of Debbie and me. The Muppets were also a bit sparse on the ground as Norma was the quiz setter for the night. So here we go!

I wrote the above 4 nights ago with the intention of completing the full report at a later date. However that time has come and now sitting here in a Faceless Wolverhampton hotel I dig out my paperwork and notes in order to write said report. But Doh! and Doh! Again! The only papers I have are from a four weeks ago! So as my inner Homer said, Doh!. Anyway The Muppets won and that’s enough for anyone to take in. I do promise to do better next time, and of course a Blogger’s word is her bond (and if not, I do have a delete Post button in emergencies)

Quiz Night (15) Quiz, Oh No!

Here I go again, its the quiz tomorrow night and I have yet to post last weeks report, so no doubt I will get moaned at. In my defence I am desperately trying to finish my quiz as it is my turn tomorrow and I still have only 50 out of 80 questions set. It didn't help that I spent over an hour trying to find the collective noun for a group of Capybara. As it is now 12.45 am I am afraid I will only be able post the briefest of reports, which may be a relief for anyone who struggled through last weeks drivel. In my ever tiresome quest to come up with a film based theme for each quiz, this is the one time to call upon my emergency standby film title and poster. Thank heavens for Robert Redford's Quiz Show!

It was Campos turn, in this weeks Poorly Reported Meakins Cricket Club Quiz.
Time and tiredness means that all I can say is Sixth Sense won and we didn't. Oh and of course me and Vicky argued over nearly every question! So I will just leave you with a few of the nights questions
+ What happened in August 1092 at Ledburn, Buckinghamshire ?

+ Who was the first footballer to transfer for £ 1 million ?

+ What was unusual about the theme song for the last Bond Film, Casino Royale ?

+ What is the currency of Uruguay?

+ Why am I still doing this at 1.30 am, when I have to be up early ?

Quiz Night (14) Quiz Fiction

I have been taking some stick of late for the paucity of my quiz reports. These are the same quizzers who cannot be bothered to post any comments on my blog. So I an act of pointless revenge this weeks report will be completely overwritten. So apologies to any English scholars for the split infinitives, strained metaphors and downright tortuous prose that follows in this episode of the Trashy Meakins Cricket Club Quiz. For all you moaners on a Wednesday night, it serves you right.

.....The night was heavy. Heavy with rain, heavy with expectation. As we pulled down the drive, the club house blurred into sight through the splatter of raindrops smeared by the flapping torn windscreen wipers. I turned to Vicky, the remaining half of our quiz team, 3nonBlondes. She appeared distracted, fumbling though her handbag, rechecking she had her vitals. Cigarette and Lighter were duly retrieved. “Its quiet tonight”, she offered, looking ahead to the solitary car parked adjacent to the club. She sparked her cigarette lighter into life and with a brief fizzing crackle lit up the night's first cigarette. “Well we could be lucky, and no one else turns up” I replied with nervous laughter. No response was needed. We both knew of the trials to come. A light flicked on in the clubhouse. The watery glow that eminated was like a far off beacon, enticing unwary quizzers onto the rocks of ignorance. We pulled onto the car park under the protective lea of the sight-screen, which at its rightful time and place threw a red ball into sharp relief, but in the embers of a wet evening only cast long moonlit shadows, heightening our sense of foreboding.

Last week there had been no quiz. It had been a respite for us, a release from the relentless battering the 3nonBlondes had suffered of late. The year had started with such hope, such promise. Three consecutive wins had put us ahead, but that was in January and now an ever fading memory, only kept alive in the archives of an obscure blog. A time gone past of a simpler age. A time when no one had heard of the Credit Crunch. A time when Stoke City were just a midling midlands Championship football club. A time when The Blondes were winners. We needed to turn thing around, and quickly, but yet again we were shorthanded. The missing Blonde Debbie was 400 miles away and out of reach. We steeled ourselves for the battle to come as we stretched out of the car into the rain soaked unusually chilled May night air. The slow crunch of a tyre on gravel signalled the arrival of a rival. I looked back as Gaynor from the SixthSense team parked under the protection of the sight-screen. A mutual wave of the hand signalled a greeting. For now we were all friends, but once that hammer went down, every word every gesture would be finely tuned to distract the opposition. The club was sparse, at first glance deserted even. From out the back, Ron emerged to the bar, cleaning a glass, with the air of world weariness earned from a thousand quiz nights. The only sound was a muffled buzz from a nearly muted TV in the corner displaying the sad spectacle of an England Football team reduced to friendlies instead of tournaments.

We took up our usual usual positions, each team guarded their tables with the territorial instinct of feral cats. Just fleetingly I briefly toyed with the idea of claiming a different table, but knew this would unsettle Vicky as much as our opposition, so I settled down in my seat. I vainly attempted a relaxed, diffident, and confident pose, but only managed a nervous, forced looking slouch, which is in itself a feat. Vicky still looked distracted, but I wasn't worried she would come good once the quizzing started. I clicked my pen repeatedly, like a hit man locking and loading his rifle, in anticipation of the kill. The club started filling. Firstly another sixth sense Sue entered. With greetings exchanged she joined Gaynor at the SixthSense table. They both looked calm and relaxed contrasting with mine and Vicky’s nervous shuffling. We had both downed our first drinks before others arrived. One from the Muppets came in next armed with a folder of papers that indicated that she would be the night’s inquisitor. Soon she was joined by a phalanx of muppets. You could never tell how many muppets would appeared on a night. They seemed to vary in numbers with an unexplained randomness. I’m not even sure sometimes if they know each other, or just amass at a given time and place through some age old instinct passed down through generations of quizzers. Last to arrive entering the club with a confidence of seasoned gunslingers were the three Campanologists, clearly relishing the fight ahead. They always arrived together and their quiet dignified unity contrasted with the hubbub from the crowd of Muppets in the far corner.

As if from nowhere the Throwout sheets appeared on our tables. At first glance they appeared benign, Simple plain photocopies belying the complexity of the challenge contained within. There was no time to lose. There would only be an all to brief 10 minutes before the quiz in chief started. Every team knew that this was valuable gifted time to get to grips with the throwouts. The chatter and laughter petered out as the huddles formed. Two separate unconnected throwouts initially needed a division of labour, that later on would require the cooperation of brain storming. I looked at my throwout. 16 countries with 16 currencies to pair off. Hearts sank in all four teams as it was quickly obvious that there were no easy givens. It would be too much to hope for a US dollar, a French Franc or even an Indian Rupee. I even had a yen for a Yen, but to no avail. I spied one answer I knew, and with a self contained sigh chalked off Ireland and the Punt. Almost imperceptibly I could sense each of our foes concurrently Punting. As for the other 15 obscure nations with even more obscure, probably obsolete currencies, well they would need more than one mind. I turned to help Vicky with her throwout, hoping to see a sheet full of confident answers, but only seeing a furrowed brow between the hands clasping her head. “This is rock” came a sound from behind her arms. “Lets have a look” said I hoping to sound reassuringly confident, that may well have come across with a unintentional arrogance. Listed down her sheet were 16 inventions and milestones of the 20th Century to be paired with their corresponding year. For the youngest and sexiest team we were clearly going to be at a disadvantage, unless all the years were from the 80’s and 90’s. Again there were no givens, such examples being the inventions of Lego and Cans opened by ring pulls. Who could possibly know, well not us anyway. I looked at Vicky, hearts sinking in unison. Vicky stirred us from our trance of ignorance. “We should try and work backwards”, she suggested with a hope not born from experience. The latest date from the options was 1994. The only possible answer was The opening of the Channel Tunnel”. Well its at least a start I said to myself.

With the quiet, almost unnoticed cry of “Is everyone ready” the room suddenly hushed. All eyes turned to the small, insignificant table at the back of the room distinguished only by an unused microphone. “The first round will be maths questions”, so for the next few minutes answer sheets were filled with long division and multiplication, that used up any spare corner. The trickiest one was to find the square root of 1024, which inevitable meant a degree of trial and error. The quiz was soon in full stride. All four teams were locked in close huddles, murmured whispers of correct and incorrect answers filled the space creating a consistent background only pieced by sporadic laughter or shrieked bickering. The later was usually provided by Vicky and myself.. By half time food we were already half disheartened. Our sheet was peppered with missing answers and the throwouts remained mainly blank. While our opposition enjoyed some sustenance, we just had our heads down in frantic thought. I was wholly jealous of the other teams. The Campanologists and SixthSense appeared confident and relaxed with the knowledge of a successful first half. The Muppets were relaxed with a resignation gained from a lack of expectation. Only us, the ThreeNonBlondes trapped in the frustrated memories of past victories and recent failure. For a moment under a moment's delusion, I knew how those England players on the TV must have felt. With the hurried completion of missing answered so guessed, the papers were marked and we had the ritual of half time roll call. “SixthSense ?”,”41”.”Blondes ?””33”, I sighed in reply. “Campanologists”,”42” was the surefooted reply. “Muppets”,”34” came through. That meant we were plumb last. Vicky and me shared a knowing look of disappointment. We knew we were struggling on our throwouts, so we needed a good second half to avoid a repeat of The Blondes now legendary Halloween themed debacle.

The second half was simply hard core General Knowledge. Instead of the needed focus Vicky and me got involved in more self indulgent bickering. The disagreement was about the name of the ship that rescued the Titanic survivors, with Vicky rashly wagering £10 that it was The Lusitania. Not only was this incorrect, but it caused us to miss 2 more questions, and on top of the question was about the first liner sunk in the second world war. This pointless trivia one up-manship that we slide into is exactly the lack of focus that has plagued recent quizzes. A rookie mistake that we should now be beyond, but at least I earned myself a tenner. The second half was over almost as soon as it had started. The call went out for answers to be swapped for marking. We still had half the throwouts left to complete. My now weekly cry went out “Can we have five more minutes”, so the next few moments were filled with thowout guessing, in a desperate attempt to garner a few more precious points.

The marking was soon over, but the competition was not. From the half time scores there were 2 separate battles. The Camponologists were vieing neck and neck with SixthSense for outright victory. The Muppets and ourselves were battling for 3rd place, or more honestly who wouldn't come rock bottom. The second half scores were noted and the final results were read back to us. The Muppets 63, ThreeNonBlondes 64, The Campanologists 82 and SixthSense 85.
Well at least we had staved off last place, but this was more luck than judgement. The heavy tense atmosphere that pervaded through the quiz subsided, and as we bade our farewells into the cold dank night air, thoughts turned to simpler more practical matters, food. "Would the kebab shop still be open? What about McDonalds ? Now what was it the French called a Quaterpounder with Cheese?". There right then, I knew I should have made the most of half time sandwiches.....
If any of you have bothered reading all that, you A) Are a self indulgant Meakins Club quizzer. B) Really, really have too much time on your hands, but obviously not as much as this feckless author or C) My stalker

Quiz Night (14) The Quizzes of Staffordshire County

I know I'm a week behind ( better than having a weak behind!), however some minor scuffle between a couple of middling footie teams, and future Stoke City victims has meant no quiz this week. Boooooo. Still every cloud...I have a whole week more to badly write my report.

So here we go. Last week it was the turn of SixthSense Sue to grill us in another round of the enigmatic Meakins Cricket Club Quiz.

We were once more deprived of Vicky, who had selflessly given her self over to work. Last time Sue set the quiz it was more tricky than applying liquid eyeliner on a train (trust me I've tried it!).
It was a good old fashioned hard core general knowledge quiz this week, kicked off with a few questions from this week's news. It's amazing how hard it is to recall details from just a few days passed. I am a total news junkie, yet my mind went blanker than the comments page on my blog! I got particularly frustrated trying to recall the name of that mad Austrian bloke, who bricked up his family in a cellar, even though it was wall to wall on the news. When the first half finished Debs and me thought we had done ok. Just shows how little we knew. The scores were Muppets 33, ThreeNonBlondes 34, Campanologists 38, SixthSense 42.

The half time sandwiches and rolls looked really tempting, but I am still forlornly sticking to my diet, so I just plucked out the meat from a sandwich as a got my head down on the dreaded Throwout.
Usually we do ok on these but this week was fiendish. There was an anagram of an actor to unravel and then 15 anagrams of his films. After much head straining we figured the actor to be Clint Eastwood. So we set about recalling his films to see if they would fit. "Dirty Harry" obviously, but no! "In The Line of Fire", on the telly just the other night, but no! It appeared that Sue had mischievously chosen some of his more obscure film. Still we did get a few like the titular "Bridges of Madison County" and "Escape From Alcatraz", mainly because it contained a Z. The thing that drove me mad about these anagrams was that the letters weren't randomly jumbled in the usual way, or even arranged into alternative words such as CLINT EASTWOOD = OLD WEST ACTION. No, the letters were arranged alphabetically so "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" became AABDDDEEEGGHHHLNOOTTTUY! for crying out load. It was so counter intuitive! Anyway rant over and back to the second half .

...or not. When I usually write these reports I keep hold of the answer sheets and recall the accompanying questions. Now belatedly writing this a week late all I see is a random list of words, so if anyone could provide the questions to these answers given I would be eternally grateful: Lou Ferigno, Raffles, Spanish Riding School, Stone Fish, E, Syphilis and Capybara. The final totals came in.

Muppets 61, ThreeNonBlondes 70, Campanologists 74 and SixthSense 87!

With my inability to recall any questions in detail, I will leave you with a few Clint Eastwood film anagrams.

Quiz Night (13) The Three Quizzetters

This week we were sadly one team down, with The Campanologists missing in action. So it was down to three teams to battle it out in this week's swashbuckling Meakins Cricket Club Quiz.

It was our very own Debs in the chair tonight, so me and Vicky were left as a bickering duo. Fittingly for an Early Years Practitioner (never call her a Teaching Assistant!) The first half of the quiz went through the alphabet, and satisfyingly the first answer was A for Apple. Less satisfyingly the quiz got harder. By the time we got to Y, we were asked to name the Tent from Nepal made from the skin of Yaks. Amazingly both SixthSense and us came up with the comedy answer Yak-a-Mak. Apparently the answer is Yurt.

The first half also had 20 linked questions with each answer starting with the last letter of the previous one. We only missed out on one answer. What is the name of the young of an Otter (No its a little 'otter jokes please). We figured it had to start with W and end in P. So we plumped for inserting random letters in between and ended up with the stupid answer of WhalloP! The real answer is Whelp.

Half time hotdogs were duly scoffed

The second half was Entertainment questions. We started pretty well but soon descended into the tactic of writing really illegibly, on the off chance it might look like the right answer. This tactic I remember served me well through O levels, but it was never going to fool those Muppets, who were marking our paper. We would have to rely on the throwouts. Identifying TV shows was ok for us. Especially with such classics as The Banana Splits and Wil o' The Wisp. The other was to work out makes of car. For instance "Gracie Fields owned a villa on which island?" the answer being Capri (my suggestion that there might be a Ford Lesbos was clearly misjudged).

So the time had come for the scores.

The Muppets 52 + 12 for the throwouts = 64. ThreeNonBlondes 59+13=72 and the runaway winners SixthSense 74=17=91. That works+ out SS scored 26% more than us. A dictionary definition of a good thrashing!

Quiz Night (12) Quizspotting

This post's title is in honour of this week's Inquisitor, Campanologist's John's, Scottish roots. Its time for another round of the highly addictive
Meakins Cricket Club Quiz

I was met with a bunch of complaints from, from various quizzers, apparently unhappy at the brevity (ie complete lack) of last weeks report. So here I am at midnight slaving away when I ought to be sleeping. All this pressure to write. I feel just like JK Rowling! This may also result in a bout of overwritten melodrama!

John's quizzes are always interesting and challenging (I prefer dull and easy quizzes). Two rounds were Trivia Trails, with each answer starting with the last letter of the preceding one. This is always a tricky round with the potential if you get one question wrong it throws you off all the others. We did well on these rounds getting 8/10 and 10/10 respectively. Other rounds included guessing the connection between 5 film actresses and finding the year connecting 10 answers. These year was 1959. They never seem to have years from the 3 non Blonde's lifetime's, with us being the youngest team (even with me). Whats wrong with the eighties and nineties! There was also a round where we had to name the 5 post war Democrat Presidents, and the last 5 league champions outside the current top 4 Premiership teams. We should have been able to relax, but Vicky and Debs were still driving each other mad over the answer to which zodiac sign comes between Libra and Leo? My thoughts that it was Romulus was sadly wrong.
The first half scores came in. The Muppets 36, The Campanologists 41, Three non Blondes 45 and Sixth Sense 50......Time to eat.....and present Vicky's Dad a birthday cake, and a woeful "Happy Birthday"

By the start of the second half we had completed our throwouts which involved multi choice questions, which each gave a letter to an anagrams of two famous people. Sounds complicated...and it is. We were confident we had them all correct, but suspected all our rivals did too. This would mean everything was riding on the second half arranged around a Bingo card. This is so complicated to explain in a post, but I will try. Each team has a different 5x5 bingo card with random numbers 1 to 25 (Duh! like a bingo card then). Anyway when the answers are read out in a random fashion the first team to get a line of 5 correct answers wins a bonus whole 5 points (count them!)...and..How many points were we behind the SixthSense...5! We were in with a chance if we could just get the line first.
Due to Johns efficiency each answer sheet had a carbon copy so as we marked the SixthSense's answers we could check off our own. As each answer was read out we were matching them blow for blow. Both teams pretty soon had 4 out of 5 in a line, needing only 1 more. Would we get it first, would SixthSense get it first. Who would get the glory. Both teams sat trying to look cool but anxiously glancing at each other. Which way would it fall. Tick tock, tick tock. Time slowed to a crawl as each answer was read out. Even the noisy cricketers at the bar fell silent. Then the cry went out "Line!".......It was the bloody Muppets! they had won the extra 5 points. Those should have been our extra 5 points, that would have put us level with the mighty Sensers. How could they.

Even the sharing out of Vicky's dad's Boob shaped birthday cake failed to lift our heavy hearts.

Choose Cake, Choose Defeat

Final Scores.
Muppets 76, Campanologists 83, ThreeNonBlondes 91, SixthSense 96

Quiz Night (11) The Sixthsense Redemption

On Wednesday night it was yet another Muppet in change this week (I think they have started breeding!) Big Kevin was the quizmaster in another Captivating installment of The Meakins Cricket Club Quiz.......

......I have hit a snag.

I wrote this introduction straight away, with a view to completing my usual overwritten report later. Thing is, I have now lost my notes, and all I can remember apart from who won, was that we had some nice rolls to eat at break, and I learnt that James Cagney was once a Female Impersonator.

.....So until I find my notes. Sixth Sense won and everyone else didn't

That leaves 6th Sense on 10 wins, 3 non Blondes on 4 wins, Campanologists on 2 wins and The Muppets on 0 wins.

Normal Service will resume next week

Quiz Night (10) Crispless in Stoke

Chris was in charge for this weeks artificially flavoured Meakins Cricket Club Quiz.

Our 3 opposing teams were all again at full strength. We were however without Debs through a dodgy tum. So it was just me and Vicky, who was still suffering from PTERD (Post Traumatic Emu Related Disorder), so I guess we were handicapped.

We were off. Chris's quiz consisted of categories of 5 questions each. It was an eclectic mix of very particular themes.

Food-T Shirts-Odd one out-Sport-Magic-Doctors-Geography-Banned-Beer-Tools-4 letter words-Clothing.

It takes some sort of genius to be expert in all these. Sadly not our sort of genius! Anyway for a change we didn't take scores at half time so after some sandwiches and chips (fries Brad) we plodded on. After the main 60 questions there was a tension filled gamble round. This was three questions that had slowly revealed detail. If you ran up and presented your answer (guess) earlier you got 10 points, going down to 5 and then 3. This proved a crucial round and our earlier guessing on the answer Bermuda bagged us 10 points.
The scores came in for the main part of the quiz. Muppets - 35, non Blondes - 38, Campos - 40 and SixthSense - 40.

Now to the throwouts. We were initially given 3 different one. Pics of famous people (and Abi Titmus), Proverbs to guess from initial letters (and we were without our resident wordsmith Debs), and best of all, Guessing the flavour of a variety of Crisp based snacks from pictures of the packets! We had found our strength. Vicky and me (well Vicky really) had an encyclopedic knowledge crisp flavours. (Who needs to know History and Geography? This was real general knowledge!)
Then the bottom fell out of our world! Chris decided that this part would not be included in the quiz main, but would be for a bottle of wine! Screw that! I would take the quiz points every time. We got 14 out of 20, nearly double that of everyone else and victory would have been ours!! But no, all we have is a promised bottle of wine which only Debs will drink anyway.

Anyway rant over. The final scores were in. It was going to be close.
Muppets - 49 points, Sixth Sense - 55 points, 2 Blonde Nuns - 60 points and ring out the bells! The Campanologists - 66 points

Quiz Night (8) The Night of the Quizzing Dead

It was time for the non blondes very own Victoria to put us to the test, and boy did she do that, in the latest round of the terrifying Meakins Cricket Club Quiz

The first half was categorised. We started off with Cars All those Sunday evenings watching Top Gear should have paid dividends for Debs and me. We did ok, but missed a couple. Especially the question about the make of car that's name translated as 3 diamond. We could picture the badge with the 3 diamonds on, but skirted round all the Asian makes while missing the correct answer of Mitsubishi. We moved to a section of odd ones out, which saw a welcome 5th return for the mascot of our quiz, the worlds largest rodent. Ladies and, we give you the Capybara. Now onto sports. We usually do well on sports, but Vicky's somewhat wide definition of Sport ranging from Fly fishing to Canoe Polo (Not sure how you get a horse in a canoe!) did not help us. Her next section had answers that were occupations. We did well on this, helped by knowing a Bishop and a Carpenter from the soap Neighbours! Sadly neither of our jobs helped with answers being a Trade Unionist or Early Years Practitioner (don't' mention Classroom Assistant!). The first half ended with science. Now my claim to be a one time Physicist was looking increasingly foolish, as we managed none of the fist six questions. Thank god for the break. The scores were in. Campos 26, Muppets 27, 3 non Blondes 31 and Sixth Sense 32. It was too close to call. Being stuck on a slimming world Red Day (again) I watched as everyone gorged themselves on rolls and chips and cake and everything else I can't eat!
The second half was hard core general knowledge (and I mean hard!) We had a vast swathe of blank spaces where we should have known the definitions of words like; Ligneous, Esurient, Lambent, Tourbillion, Caprine & Gnallic. I felt as inarticulate as a....errr a thingy! We did start to improve. Debbie accurately calculated the number of Wednesdays in a December, and my blogging hero Dave Gorman provided the answer to "What is a Googlewhack". This blog also helped one team out with a previous post giving the name of the depressed robot in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Second half finished, we knew we had struggled. We needed a miracle on the throw outs. Well, I had said this was a macabre quiz. The first throwout was multi choice on Cereal Killers. Right up Debs street (I think she has dated a few in the past!). The second was the highlight of the whole quiz. 20 pictures of gravestones of famous dead people (My apologies to Yoko Ono, who I thought was. Apparently she is still alive) These were fiendish, requiring a degree of reduction. Some of the writing was very small, so a magnifying glass was passed round, making us all look very scholarly (and somewhat shortsighted). I would have expected Sixth Sense to do well, as the film said "They see dead people", but we managed to pip them with 12 out of 20. Sadly it was never going to rescue our second half.

Final scores : The Campanologists 57, The Muppets 64, 3 non Blondes 68 and back on top Sixth Sense 79

Quiz Night (9) Blonde Actually

Its Easter week for the amlost religious Meakins Cricket Club Quiz. We were 3 non Blondes + 1 this week, with our friend Samantha joining us. Sam is the Blondes music consultant, and with our dreadful record on music recently, we needed the help. Typically this was the first week where there was no music round! We were also accompanied by three of our offspring, Sam, Beth and Abigail. Ostensibly this was due to the holiday period, but the real reason was for an emergency 5th team that we might be able to beat and hence not finish last!

It was Sixth Sense's Gaynor's turn in the hot seat. That meant they were down to 2 members. With the Campos also still down to 2 members, this was a good opportunity for us. It is always difficult gauge a usual strength for the muppets as their numbers seem to range week to week from 4 to something in the mid 20s.

Gaynor started with some Pot Luck. We did ok on this. We did let ourselves down trying to remember the name of the care Richard Hammond crashed in on Top Gear. All of us are avid viewers, but our minds were as blank as our bank paying in books!. We then moved on to the highlight of the quiz. Movie Quotes. Gaynor read out lines from classic movies, with a passion and intensity that moved me! Well I did nip off to the loo! These quotes became longer and longer, until the last question when she pretty much performed the entire last half hour of Love Actually. This was another good round for us. The round following was Only in America. We would have been better for us titled "Only in Weston Coyney and the Meir!" The last round of the first half was on Disasters. This was right up our street, and for this first time we got 10 out of 10. It was nice to see a return for the "Name the Russian Sub that sank? -The Kirsk" question. This is its 3 rd appearance, ranking second only to the "Worlds largest Rodent" question which has made 4 appearances to date. We have adopted the Capybara as our quiz night mascot, and will henceforth make an appearance in every Blondes' quiz!

Half time refreshments. Linda had put on a full spread. I just sat miserable being committed to a Slimming World - Red Day. However my mood lifted when the scores came in. Campos - 28, Muppets - 29, Sixth Sense - 35 and us the Blondes - 28

Second half teed off with a fiendish round on Words, in which Debs excelled herself by spelling Diarrhoea correctly. The next round was right up Vix's street, as our resident Bible and Latin expert. It was titled The Good Book. Thanks to Vix we did really well on this. The final round should have been right up my alley, being on Current Affairs. I was chuffed to remember the name of the Indian Company that had bought Jaguar and Landrover, but the round was too current, and I hadn't listened to the news that day. The main quiz over, we turned to finishing off the throwouts. We had gone as far as we could recognising some leading men from photos. They were an eclectic mix of men. Cant be often that Foggy from Last of the Summer Wine has appeared next to Republican candidate John McCain. The second throwout had tortured us throughout the quiz. Anagrams of Comedy Characters. We eventually thrashed out 13 out of 15. One anagram "A CLEANER RENT LOFT SHY MAN" drove Debs to Captain Ahab levels of obsession, but unlike he, she never got her Dick!

The final scores were in: Campos - 75, Muppets - 79, Sixth Sense 82 and The non Blondes - 93...... We are back!

" When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around.”...

and so is VICTORY Actually

Sixth Sense - 7 wins, 3 non Blondes - 4 wins, The Campanologists - 1 win, The Muppets - 0 wins

Quiz Night (8) All The President's Muppets

Well so much for the power of prayer. Next week we shall try witchcraft! I've just got back from our now weekly humiliation at the now Internationally famous Meakins Cricket Club Quiz. I can confidently make this claim now we have information that this damn blog has been viewed in 18 countries! Note of caution: If you haven't seen the 1976 movie "All The President's Men", then some of this post may not make much sense!( no difference there)
I am feeling under pressure this week from the rest of the quizzers, now that they are reading these reports. On arival, I was immediately descended upon by various Muppets and Sixth Sensers with points to make over the accuracy and fairness of my reports. I informed then firmly that no one should attempt to sensor the power of the press. In the tradition of Woodward and Bernstein, I must report the facts as I see them, and will not be bowed by the pressure of vested interests! The public has a right to know! (Have I gone over the top yet!) Unless of course our team continues to lose, in which case I reserve the right to spin (i.e. lie) the results in our favour. The Watergate theme works pretty well this week as poor Muppet member Anne, this week's Quizmistress, had to suffer her way through a croaky voice, thus becoming our very own "Deep Throat". I did wait fot a Robert Redford lookalike to appear but alas was dissapointed.
The quiz started well for us, for a whole 4 questions, then the rot set in. Our answer sheet started to contain more blank spaces than answers, as we bickered and hesitated our way through the first half. The low point came when we ere asked to name all 9 of Queen Victoria's children. We managed only 1 of them and that was through the tactic of putting down every royal sounding name we could. On reflection I think Brooklyn and Britanny were probably very poor guesses!! We also started to irritate the rest of the room by completely losing our place. Clearly counting 1 to 40 was beyond us this week. This was probably the worst first half performance we had put in. The only question we were confident of was "What is the shape of Mr Rush from the Mr Men books?" We had found our level.
We gained back some favour from the club by providing the food. An eclectic collection of pan European Dishes (Well we had Lasagne) and some Sausage Rolls.
The first half scores were in. Look away if you are easily disturbed, this was not going to be pretty. Sixth Sense - 30 , The Campos - 22 , The Muppets - 21 and Us The Blondes a pitiful -17!
Still we stood a chance in the second half. That chance was, if all the other teams suddenly realised they had collectively left the gas on and rushed home. My half time suggestion of some form laxative poisoning in the food had been vetoed by my teammates, mainly because they too hungry themselves! The second half was an improvement for us, although we still managed to talk ourselves out of right answers! There was one controversial question "What is the unusual thing that an oyster does every year" The answer was "Change Sex" which is obviously not that unusual, being that at least 8 % of our quizzers had done so! Although we improved we did have moments of utter stupidity, managing to answer one question as "George Best", instead of correctly "William Shakespeare" The throwouts were an interesting mix, with some Dingbats, some collective animal names and the duration of number 1 hits to answer.
The final scores were in The Campos - 58, The Blondes - 60, The Muppets - 68 and guess what! Sixth Sense - 89 points. I am really beginning to think they must have sold their souls in some pact with the quiz devil! After the quiz a Muppet delegation challenged my previous reports that they were yet to score, especially as they were a clear second this week. I countered with the pompous opinion that second place is nowhere in the dog eat dog (hotdog would be more apt for us) world of the quiz. Second Placers are the First Losers! Still, we are in no place to crow only avoiding being the Last Losers by 2 points!
To Complete the Watergate theme. i would love to have reported that the Muppets got a well deserved Victory, but in the twisted words of Richard Nixon "There will be no Whitewash in the White Club House"

Quiz Night (6.1) There's something about Jenny

She has done it! Vicky has finished last weeks report.

Well after much delibaration and hard work...im finally ready to post my detailed report on the previous weeks quiz... Here goes....
I would like to start this article by making a few things clear to the readers of these reports, if you find any mistakes or incorrect use of punctuation this is so done as not to show just how poor Jenny reporting skills are..... There was a definate air of tension in the cricket club that evening, mainly from us non blondes,as much as it pains me to say Jenbo(Beths pet name for jenny,I like to think she ment to say Dumbo....) actually does come into here element at the quiz so debs and I were feeling distinctly nervous at the prospect of "going it alone" and this was not helped by the fact that while handing out the throwouts Jen decided to whisper(i say whisper but i use it lightly)that she had forgot the answers to part of the quiz!!!..so not only was there a definate chance that the team was going to look rubbish without her but there was also now a chance the team would look extremely incompetent also!..not that this would be the first time,we actually turned up for the christmas party(goodies in hand) on the wrong day! The teams stood as,sixth sense full team quota, campos at two,non blondes at two and the muppets at 9 million.....I believe there was some out of town help from a muppets family.... The Quiz was about to start we all sat poised with pen in hand waiting for that first question........And this is the position Deb and I held most of the evening, our pen rarely touched paper! Sixth sense were their usual busy selves scribbling down most of the answers, the campos, down john, also seemed busy answering the questions, the muppets were also writing down answers at a terrifying speed......There seemed no hope! suprisingly at half time we had managed to pip second place from the muppets! this injected a health of over confidence into the two of us...."we wernt useless...we didnt need her.....ahhhh we scoff at your quiz Miss Harvey" were just some of the comments flying between us..........then sadly came the second half. This was not one of our finer moments we struggled on the throwouts (shots of bloody buildings! I ask you) and even seemed to find the T.v characters a problem, which was odd as deb really does have square eyes!!! all in all it was a moment akind to the sinking of the titanic(not so many deaths granted)...the final tally was in 1st place Sixth sense,2nd the campos,3rd the muppets and last but not least the 3 non blondes,But as eveer it was a great evening as always......and I just have to say...WATCH OUT SIXTH SENSE...THIS IS JUST A LULL.......and on that mature note im going to bid my farewells and leave the wriring to Jen..........Vix x

Quiz Night (7) A Cheese Too Far

It would be great to be able to report a dramatic nip and tuck tussle for victory at this week's Meakins Cricket Club Quiz sponsored by The British Cheese Board™ "Because Cheese is not just for Crackers" Sadly I can't because this week it was a runaway victory. I will try and leave an air of tension by not revealing the winners (Like you can't guess!)

It was the turn of the Campos to provide the quiz. With one member still absent (Get well soon John xxx), this meant it was down to Mick to ring the bells by himself! The other 3 team were at a full fighting weight. This quiz was literally the Sublime to the Ridiculous, starting with Art and Literature and ending with Cheeses! Let me provide the filling for this Art / Cheese Sandwich, if you will!

We started ok on the literature questions, until the question Who wrote "A Spaniard In The Works"? We spent ages trying to remember the actor who played the Spanish waiter Manuel in Faulty Towers. After going round the houses we cam to Andrew Sachs....Sadly the answer was John Lennon! This pointless and plainly wrong deliberation meant we missed the next couple of questions. We struggled through geography and found our feet again on TV and Science. Half time....mmmm Sandwiches and Chips... Ironically no cheese sandwiches though. Thanx to Vix for volunteering us, our team will be providing food next week. The scores were in... Campos - 32 ; Muppetts - 34 ; Blondies - 36 and Sixth Sense - 47!, yes 47 out of 50!!

Second half underway...First section on Dr Who was good fun and we did well. Next up film quotes, again a good round for us except for the "Think we gonna need a bigger boat" quote, in which we went through the whole cast of Jaws, except for the right answer the recently departed Roy Scheider (NOT Schneider, there is no N! as everyone keeps saying!). We were woeful on the music round. Then came the Quiz defining round.

Name the 10 best selling Cheeses as listed by the British Cheese Board?

I will leave the answers to you except the one answer that drew unanimous scorn. Cottage Cheese is NOT a cheese. The BCB are wrong. It is just lumpy yoghurt! !! I have never seen the quiz club so united. We moved to the throwouts. Identifying TV shows from pics went well. Then we had some tricky dingbats, eg CKXOTS, which was Stock Exchange (you get it!) The final scores were in The Campos - 85 ; The Muppetts - 95 ; The Blondes - 98 and Sixth Sense - 114! Hardly a close run thing!

One important note. The peace and harmony was over. The 3 non Blondes were back to their bickering best. I'm sure that is in no way connected with my return!

Highlight Questions :

+ Which one letter TV series featured an alien invasion?

+ What is the part of the body with the technical term Coxa?

+ What did 3rd Dr Who John Pertwee call his car?

+ If Fort Knox stores US gold, where is Silver stored?

+ Who was the Boxer featured on cover of Beatles Sgt Pepper album.

and one Dingbat : What word do you get from : 1.London, 2.Moscow, 3.Cairo, 4.Paris, 5.Jerusalem

Quiz Night (6) 12 Angry Quizzers

It was my turn to step up to the plate last night. My first time as Quiz mistress.

Compiling the quiz, reminded me of (not) doing homework from school, as i found myself desperately finishing everything off last minute. Any sensible person would have just ripped off the whole quiz from the net. Not me of course, My stupid arrogance meant I had to handcraft every single question to be the perfect specimen. Of course being me, the reality never quite lives up. My biggest mistake was trying to base a series of questions round our 4 team names! Trying to think of 5 interesting questions based around "Campanology" proved somewhat difficult. In the end I had to stretch the concept to include a question on "Carry On Camping" (see what I did there).
Due to help help on a question from my blog reader Brad in California, the quiz has now been renamed the Internationally Renown Meakins Cricket Club Quiz.
I kicked off with a question based around a TV doctor named after Sherlock Holmes? (I am clearly obsessed with this man!) I thought it was clever but everyone couldn't quite understand the concept of the question so I has to rephrase the question a couple of time. This stuff is more tricky to do than I thought. What a pity Jeremy Beadle passed away recently, he was good at quizzes!. I settled into my stride. Must admit my diction and delivery is hardly that of a Magnus Magnusson (another dead person! whats up with my references), so of course there had to be plenty of rereads. Everyone seemed happy enough with the first section on Films and Telly, but when I announced the next topic was Politics, I got a general consensus of "Oh No"s. I was also away all through the first half of either glares of hatred or smiles of realisation, depending on the question in my direction, from my depleted team mates in the far corner. i wasn't totally sure they would ever speak to Me again after the quiz. Would that be a good or bad thing..you decide! One thing I did notice about the "Blondes" sans Jenny, is that they didn't argue half as much as when I'm there. Don't know what that says about me. In the break we dined well on sandwiches and chips.
Second half started badly for everyone with sport and then I moved on to my Team Name themed questions. These seemed to go down quite well, with some good laughter all round! The quiz was finished off the the throwouts. These were 3 pages of pictures to identify. Buildings, Sit-com characters and Car Insignia, plus 5 questions where you had to list 5 things. Such as name the 5 boroughs of New York.
I am going to leave you all with a modicum of tension. I wont reveal the scores yet as Vicky has promised to do me a report from the quiz floor.... to follow

Quiz Night (5) The Revenge of The Sixth

"A game of 2 halves". This football cliche was perfect to describe the "Blondes" performance in the phenomenon that is,
The Meakins Cricket Club quiz.

It was the turn of a Lynne from the Sixth Sense to set the quiz. This coupled with one of the Campos recovering from surgery meant that 2 of our rivals were below full strength. We were back to our fighting weight of 3. Vicky and Debs wisely declined to join in my suggestion that we do a group huddle followed by a cry of "Go non Blondes" with arms raised! I did argue that I was the only one with real team spirit, but I expect they were both right in their opinion, that I am on occasions, a complete idiot! The quiz started intriguingly with an odd one out round. The sort of pointless knowledge needed for this was right up our street. We scored well with our knowledge of the names of the cars in "The Wacky Races", and who was an Elf in "Lord of the Rings". We had definitely found our level. We continued to score well until we hit the far to academic subjects of History and Geography
Half Time...mmm... sausage sandwiches and chips
Scores were in: Muppets - 24, The Campos - 32, Sixth Sense - 33, Blondes - 38!
Wow..5 points clear...How could we lose!! (very easily actually)
Second half was 25 questions in a bingo card style, meaning if you got a line first you got a bonus 5 points. We were woeful scoring a measly 12 out of 25. Our tactic of wild guessing and squabbling did not seem to be effective. On marking Campos got the bonus 5 for a line and Sixth scored an impressive 20 points. They were now leading us by 3. We needed to rely on the throw outs for salvation. The throw outs were about recognising Screen Kisses and cartoon rabbits. Surely with our love of kissing (not each other!) and all things Rabbitty (wish I knew the Latin term for this. I can only think of bovine or ursine!.. mmmmmm pork & beef) we would be fine. Of course we weren't. Our ability not to look at the pictures properly meant we lost more points. As the final scores were called out our deepening gloom came to fruition. 4th place Muppets 76; 3rd place Blondes 83; 2nd place Campos 87; 1st place Sixth Sense 90 points
2008 results so far
Sixth Sense 4 wins
3 non Blondes 3 wins
The Campanologists 1 win
The Muppets 0 wins

Quiz Night (4) The Campanologists Strike Back

Well, this week we were tragically down to 2 non Blondes .Vicky selflessly commited herself to her work, instead of joining in our weekly humiliation (If last week is anything to go by) . This week it was the turn of Norma from The Muppets to set the quiz. Instead of the gimicks and random categories that usually make up our quiz, this was 72 question of Hard Core General Knowledge! For us it started badly and then got gradually worse. There was controversy from the off. "What North American port has the name meaning White House?" "North AMERICAN?" came the cry from at least 1 one us. She confirmed that was the question. Debs said "Its Cassablanca" I typically poo pooed this saying its not in America. Of course I was later shown to be wrong! (or the question was wrong, either way no point!). The first half continued in the same vein. We strugggled with other querstions like "Harpaxo is a phobia of what?". The break came as a relief.Good for me, it was hotdogs on the menu (On a Red Day, for fans of Slimming World. So the dogs were sans bread! ok it was just sausages then) We turned our minds to the throwouts. One sheet was criptic clues to British Town names (eg "Ma's feeling better?" or "The director's order for the striking cast?" - The first correct answers posted on a comment wins absolutely nothing!) The other sheet involved guessing nursery rhymes from the last lines. I was confident, Debs being a classroom assistant she was bound to know the nursery rhymes! Turns out kids don't learn nursery rhymes much these days (I think they are better with Rap Lyrics), but fortunately Debs was really good at the cryptic town names. Scores were read out for first half. Muppets 22, 3 non Blondes 27, Sixth Sense 34 and The Campos. 37. We were done for!!. No way back from that... The second half questions seemed even tougher. A question came up on "Which animal has the longest tail?" Where was Vix with her QI book of Animal Facts when we needed her. The temptation in the mobile phone age to cheat and call her was palpable. But 3 non Blondes have nothing if not our intergrity (Plus we would have been caught!!)The quiz ended with the lovely question "Mesothelioma is better known as what condition? (Better known by who!! Not even Dr Gregory House would know that! mmmm I wish Dr House made house calls!!) ..We had marked Six's answers and thought we had made up ground. The final scores are in..Look away now if you dont want to know! In 4th place The Mupps with 58, 3rd The Blondes with 59, 2nd The Sixes with 61 and the clear winners (after 4 weeks of 2nd places) The Camps with 69. Though we were disappointed, we were genuinely pleased for the Camps as they have been so unlucky recently (And it still leaves us joint top!)

Next week we will be back to full strength...so probably last again!

Sixth Sense 3 wins

3 non Blondes 3 wins

The Campanologists 1 win

The Muppetts 0 win

Quiz Night (3) The St Valentine's Day Masacre

Last nights quiz was a new low point for the once magnificent 3 non Blondes quiz team, and that includes the by now infanous Christmas debacle.

Back to full strength we started the quiz with a completely misplaced confidence. The theme of the quiz was Valentines Day. It became clear very quickly that not only did we know very little about matters of the heart, but there was precious little love flowing through our team. It started with me winding Vicky up by critisising her handwriting and moved on to an almost full on spat over which King Henry VIII wife died my which method. By now Vicky and me were by now staring in totally opposite directions like strangers on a train, desperate not to make eye contact! To call the atmosphere frosty would be an understatment equivalent of saying that the band Venom play pleasant upbeat rock music (This reference is for one person only... you know who you are !) Debbie did manage the difficult task of balancing a dignified approach to our tiff whilst desperately trying to recall the 4 members of the Bananasplits. By the time the scores were read out at half time, we were already 10 points off the pace. With the onset of food at the break, a truce had broken out in the hostilities and we were now merrily arguing the toss over our outstanding unanswered questions. The second half was much more successful. We held our own on the general knowledge and beat the other teams on the throwout sheet. Alas the cause was already lost. The results were in..In 4th place 3 non blondes. We had gone from heroes to below zeros! 3rd place for The Muppetts, 2nd went to the Campanologists (Not for the first time!) and our arch enemies Sixth Sense were victorious! However we were not last after all..We had a secret weapon. I forgot to mention that Vicky's daughter Beth and Debbie's son Sam had joined us due to it being half term. We managed to provoke them into forming their own team so "The Chav Kids" were born. Now dont get me wrong they both did really well due to Beth's knowledge of Henry VIII wives and Sam's obsession with James Bond films. However they did score less than us so technically we weren't in last place! I always new there had to be a use for kids!

Point of note...Due to our disastorous showing coinciding with Debbie and Vicky quaffing a bottle of wine before we left home. I am now insisting that, just like Footballers abstaining from sex the night before a match, our team must abstain from alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to a quiz meet. Now myself being the only non drinker in the team, I dont think my suggestion went down well with my team mates already naffed off with my supercillious atitude that night.

Well to bastardise the end of Gone With The Wind "Tomorrow is another quiz"

Sixth Sense 3 wins
3 non Blondes 3 wins
The Campanologists 0 wins, (but loads of 2nds)
The Muppetts 0 wins

Quiz Night (2) Debbie Does Meakins

"The Sweetie smell of success"

Yay !!! We are back on top of the now infamous Meakins Cricket Club quiz. Debbie's quiz was a triumph. We managed to scrape a victory at the last gasp. At the end of the questions we were locked tight with The Campanologists on 53 points. It was down to the throw out sheets. An eerie hush settled over the room. The pregnant silence of anticipation (*overmelodramitic allert*) was only broken by cry "Could I have the throwout score ofr The Campanologists. "33" rang out the reply. Vicky and me exchanged knowing glances of self satisfication. At last our year of eating chocolates and sweets bore fruit as we outscored everyone by identifying various brands of confectionary through cryptic clues. We scored 35.
It would only be fair to point out that we were aided by Sixth Sense being down to 1 member. I guess they were more accurately down to their 2nd Sense. I thoroughly expect them to be back on top next week. I also think the Campanologists are due a win after 2 close second places

Debs was on fine, school mistressly form as our quizmaster. By the end of the night she was gleefully putting down any heckling as if we were her class of 4 year olds. I am afraid that Vicky will be insufferable now, since she pointed out that we finished a distant third without her and have now won the last 3 times she has been on the team. At least next week Debs will be back to referee our bickering.

3 non Blondes 3 wins
Sixth Sense 2 wins
Campanologists 0 wins
The Muppets 0 wins

Now, in the words of Samuel Peepys "Time to bed". I learnt that tonight!___________________________________
